Tom’s Story: When Someone Says Yes

A year ago, a boy named Tom joined Mozaika. He did not arrive as just another new student. By that time, he had already faced a series of difficult experiences. Several schools in Prague had refused to accept him, and his parents had spent a long time searching for a place where he would be understood and supported.

Tom was diagnosed with ADHD.

When he first joined, it was difficult for him to function within a structured school environment. The rhythm of lessons and breaks, following rules, and maintaining attention were all significant challenges. His behaviour was impulsive. He moved constantly, expressed emotions loudly, and often experienced intense meltdowns. The world around him felt overwhelming — too fast, too loud, and too demanding.

For our team, this was also a challenge.

But we did not see Tom as a “difficult child”. We saw a child who needed support, structure, and someone willing to believe in him.

From the very beginning, the work was built together with his family — step by step, calmly and consistently. A multidisciplinary team was involved in the process: a psychologist, a speech therapist, an occupational therapist, a rehabilitation specialist, and a special education teacher. This was a coordinated effort, where each step was discussed and aligned, and every small success was recognised as progress.

Gradually, Tom began to change.

He learned to regulate his behaviour, to manage his emotions, and to build connections with others. His reactions became more stable, and he began to respond more effectively to the environment around him. His eating habits were also adjusted as part of the overall support.

At the same time, his parents received guidance and stability, helping them navigate difficult periods and continue moving forward alongside their child.

Over time, doctors were able to partially reduce his medication. This became an important milestone. Tom gained more energy, became more active and confident, and even changed physically — stronger, more coordinated, and more at ease.

Most importantly, he began to feel successful.

Over the course of a year, Tom made substantial progress. His behaviour became more stable, his ability to learn improved, and he developed the ability to listen, engage, and interact with others. In many areas, he approached the level of typically developing peers.

The next important step was an interview at a mainstream school with English-language instruction.

Tom succeeded.

At first, he was accepted on a trial basis. Within a month, teachers noted not only his behavioural stability, but also strong academic performance. Soon after, he was placed in a higher-level class based on his knowledge.

Today, Tom studies at his new school.

But his connection to Mozaika remains.

Once or twice a week, he returns — to his classroom, his teachers, and the environment that once supported him through the most difficult stage. He continues working with a psychologist and a speech therapist to consolidate his progress and keep moving forward.

And each time, he comes back willingly — to the place where he was accepted and supported when he needed it most.

For our team, this is not simply a successful case.

It is a story about trust, consistent work, and what becomes possible when families and specialists work together. It shows how, by combining effort and maintaining a structured approach, it is possible to change the direction of a child’s life.

Tom’s story is proof that even in complex situations, there is a way forward.

And often, that path begins with a simple decision:

To say, “We will take you. We will do this together.”
